Physics and Astrophysics at the University of Toronto Scarborough

Learn in a small cohort of passionate students and get one-on-one attention from our renowned faculty as you explore the universe through physics. Our hands-on courses dive into the mathematics and techniques of experimentation, and you'll investigate how to use mathematical language to create theories accurate enough to predict the results of experiments. You’ll develop skills spanning every stage of the research process, from conducting team-based research with scholars from different academic backgrounds, to assessing the reliability of data and significance of results, to using qualitative and quantitative analysis to solve problems. We also focus on communication skills, equipping you with the ability to convey complex information and data through presentations and discussions, and write technical reports and projects proposals for different audiences.

You'll develop a strong understanding of the fundamental laws of physics, then apply your knowledge to explore planets, stars, galaxies, black holes and the universe itself in advanced astrophysics courses. You’ll also thoroughly explore newer approaches to the laws of motion — namely quantum mechanics and Einstein's theories of special and general relativity, along with Maxwell's theory of electromagnetism. You’ll use these theories to make connections and reveal the workings of gases, liquids, solids, plasmas, nuclear matter, planets, stars and much more. Through physics, you’ll explore the properties of light, sound and radiation, while delving into the extraordinary behavior of materials under extreme conditions, and how this science underpins modern technology, from microwave ovens to GPS navigation.
