African Studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough

Engage with and explore ideas around African histories, culture, economics, political systems, artistic expression and belief systems in our minor program. You’ll analyze key themes within African history and culture while looking beyond the continent to assess Africa’s influence on global processes and development. Throughout the program, you’ll explore the exciting recent developments in our understanding of African civilizations, thought, political and religious systems, as well as histories of slavery, colonialism, and nationalism. Several courses emphasize African, Caribbean, and African-American cultural and artistic responses to modernity, racism, and liberation, as well as struggles for security and development.
