English Language Facility

At U of T Scarborough, we consider your admission based on academic qualifications along with evidence of English language proficiency. Proof of English language facility is required from all applicants except for those:

  • Whose first language (i.e., the language they learned at home as a child) is English, or
  • Who have achieved satisfactory academic progress in at least four years of full-time study in an English-language school system located in a country where the dominant language is English, or
  • Whose first language is French and who have achieved satisfactory academic progress in at least four years of full-time study in Canada.

If you do not meet any of the above listed criteria, you will need to show proof of English facility by taking an English Proficiency Test or by presenting one of the qualifications listed below. 

 

Acceptable English Facility Tests

Minimum Score(s)

Cambridge Assessment English C1: Advanced or C2: Proficiency A minimum overall score of 180, with at least 170 in each component. Learn more.
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL), including CAEL online A minimum overall score of 70, with no part below 60. Learn more.
Caribbean Examinations Council English courses A final grade of A (I) or B (II) in CSEC English.
Duolingo English Test The minimum requirement is an overall score of 120, with no subscore below 100. Results from tests completed before July 15, 2019 will not be accepted. For information, visit the Learn more.
English Language Diagnosis and Assessment/Certificate of Proficiency in English (ELDA/COPE) A minimum overall score of 86, with 32 in Writing and 22 in each of Reading and Listening. Learn more.
GCSE/IGCSE/GCE/AICE English courses A minimum final grade of “B” (“6” in reformed qualifications) in GCSE/IGCSE/GCE Ordinary Level English, English Language, or English as a Second Language; OR a minimum final or predicted grade of “C” in GCE A Level/AS Level/AICE English or English Language. Note that IGCSE English as an Additional Language is not accepted.
Green Path Program at U of T Scarborough Successful completion of the program, including a minimum grade of B on the English Language 60 or 60/Advanced Level summer course. Learn about Green Path - China or Green Path - Hong Kong.
International Baccalaureate English A minimum score of at least 4 (predicted or final) in Higher Level or Standard Level English A: Literature or English A: Language and Literature. English B Higher Level is not acceptable. Learn more.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) The minimum requirement is an overall band of 6.5, with no band below 6.0. Results from IELTS (Academic) for UKVI test sittings are accepted. Learn more

Note: We do not accept the IELTS Indicator test or results from the IELTS One Skill Retake. Applicants must achieve the scores listed above on a single date.

Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology A three-year diploma (Advanced Diploma) or Applied Degree in an academic program at an Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology with minimum overall grades of “B+”. A current, updated transcript is required. All three or four years of study must be completed in Ontario.
Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic The minimum requirement is an overall score of 65 with no part below 60. Results from PTE (Academic) UKVI test sittings are accepted. Learn more.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

The minimum requirement is a total score of 89 with 22 in each of Speaking and Writing.

Applicants must achieve the scores listed above on a single date. TOEFL MyBest (super-scored) results will not be used.

We do not accept TOEFL Essentials, TOEFL ITP or TOEFL ITP Plus for China for admission purposes.

University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies: Academic English course A minimum grade of “B” in English Language 60 or 60/Advanced Level. Learn more.
University Studies The minimum requirement is one year of full-time study completed at a recognized university in a country where English is the dominant language. At least four full-year transferable courses completed with a grade of “C” in each are required. Courses in progress will also be considered. A current, updated transcript is required.

Academic English

The University of Toronto Scarborough also offers Academic English, a summer language program for newly admitted students whose English proficiency scores are below the minimums required for direct admission, but are able to take English Language 60 with School of Continuing Studies to satisfy the English facility condition. Admission to this program is competitive. Applicants must be highly qualified academically and need to meet the admission requirements. Applicants who are eligible for this program will receive a conditional offer of admission to U of T Scarborough and an invitation to register for Academic English. Learn more about Academic English
