Bio:
Nataki Garrett is the current Artistic Director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and she has a particular passion for developing new work – a passion and a process that she will discuss with us during her visit on April 1. Her position at the helm of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival makes her one of only two black women running major, big-budget theatres in the US, and the first and only woman to lead a US theatre with an annual budget of over 40 million dollars. Garrett is well-known for her work with playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, having directed premieres of several of his plays, including the play Neighbors, which she directed both at the Matrix Theatre Company in Los Angeles and at Mixed Blood Theatre in Minneapolis. She will be talking with us about her work on Neighbors, and in particular, the ways in which this play necessitated an engagement with, and a performance of, blackface minstrelsy.
