Jonathan Hay - Educational or Exploitative? Understanding NFT Content on YouTube

Jonathan Hay

Abstract

Non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, have significantly risen in prominence over the past two years. Because NFTs are often acclaimed as a tool that can be used to secure proof of ownership for digital art, it is not surprising to see that budding digital artists have turned towards social media platforms to become knowledgeable about, and potentially make profits from, NFTs. One such platform that provides a wide range of instructional “how-to” videos on NFTs is YouTube. This research project aims to explicate the NFT “how-to” video domain on YouTube and the degree to which it creates and mediates the information that is disseminated on NFTs. Are NFT content creators realistic about the downsides to NFTs, or are they promoting NFTs for personal gain?
