Program: Art History and Visual Culture

👋🏼 I am Sofia Suleman (she/her), and am going into third-year majoring in Art History and Visual Culture and double minoring in Curatorial Studies and Media, Journalism, and Digital Cultures.

🧩Interesting fact about Sofia:
One interesting thing about me (though many would contest) is that I tend to watch or read the ending of books and movies before I start at the beginning. I love a good spoiler!

💡Sofia's advice to incoming students:
To all the first-year students reading this, though it may be difficult, I highly encourage you to seek help and ask questions when you need clarification. In my first year, I was terrified to take advantage of on-campus student services, like the Writing Centre. I encourage you to reach out to folks such as the Librarians for research assistance, and TAs and Professors during their office hours. I finally developed an appreciation for the support in my second year as it made a difference in the quality of my assignments and helped me to be a more confident student.

💡Ashley's advice to incoming students:
I highly encourage first years to seize any opportunities that come your way as they are good learning experiences and allow you to meet and connect with the community.

I am a singer-songwriter, an amateur filmmaker, and a diehard fan of The Office (you could quiz me). My goal is to pursue a career in advertising as I am fascinated by the influential capabilities of visual elements in a mediatized environment.

💡Aditya's advice to incoming students:
My advice for the incoming batch of first-year students would be to (as overwhelming as it may be) enjoy this transition process, network with students and professors, and finally ask as many questions as possible as that will enable you to make more informed decisions.

Program: Media, Journalism, Digital Cultures

👋🏼 I am Arthur Dennyson Hamdani (he/him) and I’m a second-year student from Indonesia. I’m a Media, Journalism, and Digital Cultures (Journalism Stream) Major with Minors in Anthropology and Critical Migration Studies.

🧩Interesting fact about Arthur:
Although I’m not taking any art-related programs, I love to paint and sketch! I was an art student in high school where I studied abroad in Guangzhou, China. I also have a great fascination with films, so if you have any recommendations, I’d love to hear them! I aim to pursue a career as a travelling multimedia journalist where I get to see diverse places with my own eyes while sharing it with the rest of the world through many mediums.

💡Arthur's advice to incoming students:
Whether you’ll be coming into your first year online or offline, reach out to people in your batch to make friends. Trust me, everyone is equally nervous for a new start, so go ahead and introduce yourself!

🧩Interesting fact about Meera:
My career goal for the future is to work in the field of conservation biology as a wildlife veterinarian. I love playing flute, and I’ve recently picked up longboarding during the pandemic!

💡Meera's advice to incoming students:
To our incoming first years, congrats on your acceptance and welcome to UTSC! Our campus is so incredibly diverse and there are so many opportunities to get involved over a variety of disciplines. Have fun exploring, and don’t be afraid to use any of the supports and services offered by the University.

Program: New Media Studies

👋🏼 I am Julianna Mathie (she/her), currently in my fourth year of study at UTSC.  I am doing a double Major in New Media Studies and Media, Journalism and Digital Cultures (Media Stream) with a Minor in Psychology.

🧩Interesting fact about Julianna:
I am aiming for a creative career; whether it be in graphic design or directing films. Lucky for me, the New Media Studies program allows me to experiment with both.

💡Julianna's advice to incoming students:
A piece of advice I have for any first-year students is to not be afraid to try new things because even if it doesn't work out in the end nothing you do in university is a waste of time.

📗 Click here to check out Julianna's survival guide.

💬 To learn more about the New Media Studies program, appointments with Julianna is on Mondays from 9pm-10pm EDT.

Program: Studio Art

👋🏼 I am Polen Light (he/him), a third-year Arts Management Specialist student with Studio Art and Creativity, Culture, and Cities as my Minors.

🧩 Interesting fact about Polen:

I love the campus life and have worked at the school gallery, the school publication, and volunteered/participated in several other clubs. A couple of things about me is that I have probably been to your next favorite place and I am an avid learner. I have a thirst for knowledge, and love learning. I spend way more time reading newspapers, listening to podcasts, or watching videos than I am willing to admit. So, chances are we’ll have definitely something in common, and to talk about.

💡Polen's advice to incoming students:
One piece of advice I’d give is to do breadth requirements early on, and/or to join clubs outside of your area of study as early as possible. It helps with adapting into university life, it gives you a better interdisciplinary understanding, and it allows you to meet people you would probably not meet otherwise. Furthermore, it may help you discover a new interest or passion. That’s how I found my current program!

📗 Click here to check out Polen's survival guide.

💬 To learn more about the Studio Art program, appointments with Polen is on Tuesdays from 4pm to 5pm EDT.

Program: Theatre and Performances

👋🏼 I am Joanna de Villa (she/her) and I am in my fourth year earning a Specialist in Arts Management and a Major in Theatre and Performance Studies.

🧩 Interesting fact about Joanna:
I am a leader in a number of student organizations on campus, where I am the Vice-President of the UTSC Drama Society, the Marketing Director for UTSC Improv, and the Coordinator of Communications and Community Outreach for Gallery 1265. While many of my strengths lie in social media, marketing, and communications, I am a proud theatre maker and actor. When I’m not glued to the screen, you can find me fumbling around town in my roller skates!

💡Joanna's advice to incoming students:
My best advice? Rely on your peers. If there’s anyone who’ll understand what you’re going through and lend you the notes for the class that you missed, it’ll be the friends you make in class.

📗 Click here to check out Joanna's survival guide.

💬 To learn more about the Theatre and Performances program, appointments with Joanna is on Tuesdays from 1pm to 2pm EDT.
