HPV Information

As a result of research we know that cell changes are often initiated by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). This is a common virus that affects both men and women. There are over 100 different strains of HPV, most do not cause any symptoms and the virus usually clears on its own. However, a few types can cause abnormal cells to grow and if left untreated over time may go on to develop cancer. Some strains of HPV can also cause genital warts. It usually takes a number of years for abnormal cells to turn into cancer which is why routine screening is so essential.

A vaccine is available to provide immunity to 4 of the strains of the HPV responsible for genital warts and cancer of the cervix. Ask your health care provider for information about the vaccine. You can also read about it at http://www.cdc.gov/std/hpv/STDfact-HPV-vaccine.htm.
