Graduate Professional Skills program (GPS)

The Graduate Professional Skills program (GPS) is a new initiative from the School of Graduate Studies to help doctoral-stream graduate students become fully prepared for their future. It focuses on skills beyond those conventionally learned within a disciplinary program, skills that may be critical to success in the wide range of careers that graduates enter, both within and outside academe. GPS can help you to communicate effectively, plan and manage your time, be entrepreneurial, understand and apply ethical practices, and work effectively in teams and as leaders.

The GPS consists of a range of optional "offerings" with a time commitment roughly equivalent to 60 hours of work. Its successful completion will be recognized by a transcript notation.

The University of Toronto Scarborough is pleased to be able to offer a number of GPS offerings on the Scarborough Campus. The current GPS offerings at UTSC are:

  1. Developing a Reflective Teaching Practice
UTSC Centre for Teaching and Learning - In this workshop, participants will learn the value of teaching dossiers and the essential skills to begin assembling dossiers of their own.
  2. Celebration of Teaching Scarborough Style: Teaching Showcase and Celebration
UTSC Centre for Teaching and Learning - UTSC's annual Teaching Showcase and Celebration is a full day event that aims to give participants ideas and skills which they can apply to their own teaching practices.
  3. Research and Writing Training for TA's

UTSC Centre for Teaching and Learning - In this workshop students will take part in a series of hands-on activities interspersed with brief lectures to learn about common undergraduate writing and research problems.

  4. TA Day: Linking Teaching and Professionalism

UTSC Centre for Teaching and Learning - This one-day program invites participants to participate in interactive sessions lead by graduate student leaders, award winners, and professionals.
