What is UTMUN?
UTMUN stands for University of Toronto Model United Nations. The main objective of our club is to raise awareness of international issues, politics, cultural diversity, and the UN within the campus. The organization works to promote a greater understanding of the importance of United Nations and how it operates. UTMUN membership is open to all University of Toronto students. UTMUN will provide its members the opportunity to attend Model United Nation conferences hosted by renowned universities from all over North America.
Model United Nations are simulations of the UN. They comprise of various committees that aim to model the structure of the UN. At MUN conferences, groups of students are assigned a particular country that they must research and represent. The committees are based on existing UN bodies such as the Security Council and Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The topics debated within the committes are diverse and include topics such as globalization, the environment, security and peace keeping, human rights, poverty and other current international issues. Through participating at MUN conferences, students gain invaluable skills in leadership, public speaking, debating, management and research.
Most of all, the conferences are excellent for networking with other students and youth activists from around the world. You not only have fun but also make lasting friendships.
