Welcome

What We Do   ::  What We Don't Do   ::  Our Mission

"Equity For Future Generations"

Officially opened in May 2007, the Sustainability Office has been created to help U of T Scarborough "meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs," as phrased by the Brundtland Commission Report in 1987. Adding to this definition, we see sustainability as a central operating principle of the campus, similar to accessibility and equity. Our goal is to see that sustainability is reflected in all aspects of campus life, and in doing so pay close attention to other objectives and human nature, so that sustainable practices are seen as common sense, not unnecessary inconveniences. Ultimately, we hope to see the term sustainability become understood simply as, "the right way to do things."

We aim to work with students, staff, and faculty on campus in order to realise more sustainable practices in all aspects of campus life. There are many people already leading the way at U of T Scarborough, and the Sustainability Office hopes to:

  • become a forum for exchanging ideas
  • create awareness of the need for sustainable practices
  • provide resources to those already involved and those who would like to be

As more and more projects are implemented across campus, sustainability will emerge not as a special interest, but a basic consideration for all aspects of campus life.

The Sustainability Office wants to work with groups and individuals, not for, over, or, against them.

  • If you are a campus group, we do not have funds to offer for projects, but we can help find you sources of funding.
  • If you are an department or office at U of T Scarborough, we cannot manage your sustainability initiatives, we want to help you adopt sustainable approaches towards everything you do.
  • We do not intend to regulate energy and water consumption, but we can help you reduce your consumption to lower your utility costs.
  • Submit your own photos and artwork along with the submission form to the Sustainability Office by Feb. 17th for the Sustainability Office's Eco Gallery 2012. Artwork will be displayed in the Eco Gallery on March 1st. Photos and artwork should relate to themes of sustainability, natural environments and sustainable development.  - (Winter 2012)
