Students For World Literacy swl@utsc.utoronto.ca As we all know, purchasing textbooks at the beginning of the university school year here at UTSC is a very hectic time for both students and the UTSC bookstore. As a result, more first year students –being new to the university arena and its unfamiliarity’s - usually have to deal with many frustrations when it comes to purchasing their course books. For example, students may have trouble knowing which books to buy for their course, they may have trouble finding second-hand (cheaper) books and also, it will help students avoid the crowded line-ups of the bookstore. At the same time, it will allow student from previous years who no longer have use for their books to give them up to incoming first years and gain money from them which they can then put to either buying their new books or anything else they may wish. But most of all, this initiative will help raise money for a charity.
The way this project will work is that a team of approximately five members will work to accumulate and collect certain first year introductory-course books, namely, Biology, Chemistry, Calculus, Management and Psychology. This book list is tentative but will be our target books since they are the most commonly used amongst first year students, mainly science students. After receiving a book from a participant student, we would write down their name and contact information and give them a slip indicating that we have their book, the name of the book, and give them a code number which we would then also attach to their book to help us identify it later. We will then tell them to come at the end of September to either come and pick up the money which we owe them for the book, or if we were not able to sell the book, we would give them the book back.
The way that we will raise money for charity is that we would take in the book and pay the seller about 50% of the books origi nal price and sell the book back to students for approximately 75% of the book price, leaving a profit margin of 25% which would then go to a select charity. To get a picture of how the money will work lets take a standard first year biology book that is $150 bran new. We would give $70 for the selling student and sell it to the buying students for $100, thereby leaving a profit of $30 for one book. If we were to successfully sell 100 of these books, we would gain $3000. If we multiply this by the six prospective books, we would reach an amount of $18, 000, quite a large some of money. However, realistically speaking, we might not be able to gain that many books, and even if we were to do half that amount, about $10, 000, it still a large some of money.
In terms of advertising, I am hoping to gain the books for the project through the helps of DSA’s and clubs, as well as through networking such as e-mail, facebook and personal contacts. In order to reach first year students to by the books, we will advertise by either placing flyers in the frosh kits they will be receiving for those who attend orientation or making a short informative announcement about this during frosh itself, or both. Also, I am hoping to make announcements in first year classes throughout the first week of school.
This proposal would mark the initial base for this project and as a full team for this project is formed, and more people are consulted we will be able to discuss the logistics and other aspects of this project more thoroughly, and evidently, add to it.

This will be the only existing true console gaming club on campus, which people desperately want to see created.
You & Me youme@utsc.utoronto.ca
To allow middle school kids in inner city areas to partake in field trips around Toronto. U & ME's primary goal is to expose these kids to an early enriching environment, and help pave a path filled with opportunities, enlightenment, and success. This organization is in response to the increase in the number of shootings and gang violence in and around the GTA.
Youth in Action at UTSC
To educate and bring awareness to the UTSC community about issues facing children in developing countries, including child labor, poverty, and sexual discrimination. Through fundraisers and social events we hope to change the lives of children everywhere by providing the funds necessary to fulfill their basic human rights. We also hope to instill positive attitudes and feelings of empowerment for youth.
