Here are a set of topics for the second (final) essay in PHLD79S. Please select one to write on.

Your essay should be between 1800-2000 words. You should strive to both explain the issue you are dealing with as clearly as possible and critically/argumentative engage with the issue. This should involve both analysing and criticising existing arguments in the readings and attempting to advance the debate with your own arguments and point of view.

1.The 2-D Approach? Try to explicate the two dimensional semantics approach to the knowledge argument used by David Chalmers. Chalmers thinks that this approach shows that the knowledge argument is probably sound. Do you agree? Why or why not?

2. Jackson's Change of Heart. Although Frank Jackson invented the knowledge argument, he no longer thinks it is very successful. Explain why Jackson has retreated. Do you agree with his new attitude to the knowledge argument? Why or why not?

3. The Final Assessment. In light of all that we have read this term, what is your final assessment of the knowledge argument? Does it succeed, or does it ultimately fail? Either way, explain and defend your answer.
