The Ito lab is based at the Department of Psychology, University of Toronto at the Scarborough campus.

We use a multidisciplinary approach to identifying the network of brain structures that work together to ensure the efficient encoding and recall of contextual and affective information, and to establish the neural and neurochemical basis of the way in which such information can come to exert powerful control over motivated behaviour. Furthermore, a natural, and important extension of this research is in establishing how these processes are altered in drug addiction, schizophrenia, and depression using animal models.

We are particularly interested in how brain regions that constitute the ‘affective’ cortico-striatal loop, together with the mesocorticolimbic dopamine pathway, regulate the contextual and affective control over approach/avoidance behaviour.
