Bursaries, Grants and Scholarships
This section will provide a brief description of the this type of funding available under OSAP. Remember, you do not have to complete a separate application to be considered for the following grants or bursaries.
Millennium-Ontario Access Grants
This grant is jointly funded by the Government of Ontario and the Millennium Foundation and is intended to help first time, first year students from low or modest income families with the cost of tuition. This grant uses the parents' income to determine the amount the student receives and the amount can range from 25% to 50% of the tuition.
Canada Access Grants
This grant is funded by the Government of Canada and is intended to help first time, first year students from low income families with the cost of tuition. This grant can cover up to half of the tuition cost, to a maximum of $3,000.
There is also a Canada Access Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities. See the section, Students with Disabilities, for more information.
Canada Study Grants
There are several categories funded by the Government of Canada:
- Canada Study Grant for Students with Dependants is available to full or part time students with dependent children. Full time students are eligible to receive up to $3,120 per year. For details on the grant for part time students, please go to the section, Part-Time Students.

Canada Millennium Bursaries
This bursary is funded by the Millennium Foundation and provides grants of $3,000 for full time undergraduate students who demonstrate high financial need. To be considered, you must complete the section of the OSAP application to confirm your wish and complete the Confirmation of Enrolment to confirm your full time student status. Both steps have deadline requirements. Your information is shared with the Millennium Foundation. Eligible students receive this bursary in the Winter session.
Ontario Access Grants
The Government of Ontario funds this bursary to help second year students from low or modest income families. It is intended to help pay for the tuition cost and ranges from, depending on the parents' income, 25% to 50% of the student's tuition. Maximum assistance is $3,000.
- Ontario Access Grant for Crown Wards assists current and former Crown wards with tuition costs. The Ontario Access Grant for Crown wards will cover 50% of your tuition, to a maximum of $3,000 for each year of your program to a maximum of four years, depending on the length of your program. The value of this grant also cannot exceed the Ontario portion of the Canada-Ontario Student Loan assistance you are eligible to receive. You must complete the required portion of the OSAP application to be considered for this grant. It is paid by cheque in the Winter session.
Students, if eligible, will be considered for only one Ontario Access Grant. In other words, you will receive either the Ontario Access Grant for Crown Wards, or the Millennium-Ontario Access Grant or Ontario Access Grant per year.
Textbook and Technology Grants
The Textbook and Technology Grant is a new grant to help full-time community college and university students with their costs for textbooks and technology. The value of the grant is currently $150 per OSAP academic year. It is paid by cheque and sent directly to the student's mailing address.
You do not need to be OSAP eligible in order to receive this grant. Students applying for OSAP will be automatically considered. All other students can apply through the separate TTG on-line application.
Commuter and Distance Grants
The Ontario Distance Grants are intended to assist full-time postsecondary students from remote and rural areas with travel costs incurred as a result of attending Ontario's publicly funded colleges and universities. These grants are picked up from the FAO.
- Commuter Grant - eligible students can receive $500 per term. To be eligible you must be living at home and commuting to school and your home address is 80 kilometres or more from the closest public postsecondary institution of the type you are attending (for example, your home is 80 kilometres or more from the closest university).
- Travel Grant - eligible students can receive $300 per academic year. To be eligible, you are a dependent student, living away from home and the closest public postsecondary of the type you are attending, is 80 kilometres or more from your home address.

Full details are available on the OSAP website.
Ontario Student Opportunity Grant (OSOG)
This grant is sometimes referred to as loan forgiveness. It is available to help students reduce their annual Canada-Ontario Integrated Student Loan debt. This grant will assist you in managing your total student loan debt. It is paid annually (after income verification) directly to the National Student Loan Service Centre. The primary aim is to pay down your Ontario Student Loan first. The maximum loan you repay is:
Two terms (21 to 42 weeks of study) ----- $ 7,000
Three terms (43 to 52 weeks of study) ---- $10,500
To be eligible for an Ontario Student Opportunity Grant you must meet the following conditions:
- You must complete your academic year (i.e. you maintain full time status for the entire study period); there is no condition upon your final grades.
- You must file your Income Tax Return(s) - you, and/or your parent(s) or spouse. Otherwise the next step cannot happen.
- You must successfully pass the Income Verification. In other words, the income reported to OSAP by you (or your parent(s) or (spouse/partner) must match the income reported to Revenue Canada. If there is a variance, the Ministry will advise you and this variance may cause you to be disqualified. That is why it is important to report changes in your income as they happen.
You do not need to fill out a special application for this grant, because the information that you supply on your OSAP application is used to determine your eligibility. If you have withdrawn, or been withdrawn, from the program, you are not eligible for this grant.
Income Verification and Discrepancies
Before the grant is sent to the National Student Loan Service Centre, the ministry verifies that you have completed your academic year and then verifies that you have met all the other eligibility requirements listed above. The ministry verifies, with the Revenue Canada Agency, your income and your parent(s)' or spouse's income (if applicable) as reported through your OSAP application (or subsequent updates you make). The Ministry will notify you in writing should there be discrepancy. You will have the opportunity to respond and to correct the information.
If there is a discrepancy between the income that is reported to OSAP and the information received from the Revenue Canada Agency, your loan entitlement is reassessed and the amount of loan(s) you are entitled to receive may change. A change to the amount of loan you are entitled to receive may affect your eligibility for an Ontario Student Opportunity Grant.
If your parent(s) have not completed an Income Tax Return (e.g. your parent(s) lives and/or works outside Canada), contact the FAO for guidance on how you can still be considered for OSOG.
The earliest the National Student Loan Service Centre will receive the grant is in the late fall.
You can confirm receipt of your OSOG by checking your online OSAP account or contact your lender (National Student Loan Service Centre at 1-888-815-4514). Complete details are available on the OSAP website.
ReviewsIf you have been denied a grant because you have not completed your academic year, your eligibility for a grant will be reconsidered if:
- You withdrew from one or more academic terms during the 12-month period before completing the term because of a serious medical condition, medical emergency, or because you were hospitalized for an extended period.
As a result, you would have to repeat the term because you were not able to attend or carry out the activities required to fulfill the course requirements in that term, and you could not reasonably have been expected to complete the term. - You were expelled from one or more academic terms during the 12-month period before completing the term.
As the result, you would have to repeat the term in the loan year subsequent to the granting of the appeal because you appealed the expulsion and a properly constituted appeal body granted your appeal, the duration of the period of expulsion reasonably precluded you from attending or carrying out the activities required to fulfill the program requirements of the term, and you cannot reasonably be expected to complete the term.
