Languages

The courses listed under the rubric LGG include language courses in French, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese; courses in English for Academic Purposes intended for students whose first language is not English; and a course on Linguistic Concepts for Effective Writing.

Registration in all language courses (all courses with the prefix LGG and language practice and conversation courses with the prefix FRE) is subject to the approval of the instructor. Students will be assessed, in a manner to be determined by the instructor, at the beginning of the course. Students whose level of proficiency in the language is deemed inappropriate for the level of the course will be excluded from the course.

LGGA11H3 Introduction to Canadian Culture and Society: A Course for Non-Native Speakers of English

A seminar course designed to introduce students who speak English as a second language to a study of Canadian culture and society through guest lectures, documentaries, non-fiction and fiction, with an emphasis on multicultural writings.

Evaluation is based on team oral presentations, research papers, and participation in class discussion.

LGGA17H3 Current Approaches to the Academic Writing Process I: A Course for Non-Native Speakers of English

A study of the conventions of academic written discourse.

Designed especially for learners of English as a second language, this course highlights the importance of relevant content, coherence, and standard documentation in academic writing.
Exclusions: LGGA99H, (HUMA10Y), (LGGA10Y)
Corequisite: LGGA19H.

LGGA18H3 Current Approaches to the Academic Writing Process II: A Course for Non-Native Speakers of English

A continuation of LGGA17H.

This course focuses on research-based writing skills and critical thinking.
Exclusions: LGGA99H, (HUMA10Y), (LGGA10Y)
Prerequisite: LGGA17H or permission of the EAP co-ordinator

LGGA19H3 Writing Practicum: A Course for Non-Native Speakers of English

This course is designed to provide small groups of students with intensive hands-on writing practice on a weekly basis.
Exclusions: LGGA99H (HUMA09H)
Corequisite LGGA17H

LGGA21H3 Introductory French I

An intensive basic course in written and spoken French: comprehension, speaking, reading and writing.

This intensive, practical course is designed for those who have no previous training in French.
Limited enrolment: 40 per section
Exclusions: FSL100H or equivalent; Grade 9 French or above (you may be asked to provide high school academic records to confirm your status). Not open to native or fluent speakers of French.

LGGA22H3 Introductory French II

An intensive course in written and spoken French; a continuation of LGGA21H.

This course is designed for students who have some knowledge of French, but have not completed Grade 11 French or equivalent. It continues the basic, comprehensive training in both written and oral French begun in LGGA21H.
Limited enrolment: 40 per section
Exclusions: Grade 11 French or above; FSL102H or equivalent; not open to native speakers or fluent speakers of French.
Prerequisite: LGGA21H or some French studies in secondary school or equivalent.

LGGA30H3 Introductory Spanish I

An elementary course for students with no knowledge of Spanish.

The course develops listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through a variety of oral and written exercises enhanced by audio-visual and computer-based materials. For students fulfilling a language requirement and those with a general interest in Spanish.
Exclusions: Grade 12 Spanish, OAC Spanish, SPA100, (SPA103), (SPAA01Y), (LGGA31Y)

LGGA31H3 Introductory Spanish II

A continuation of LGGA30H.
Exclusions: OAC Spanish and Grade 12 Spanish or Grade 13 Spanish; SPA100, (SPA103), (SPAA01Y), (LGGA31Y)
Prerequisite: LGGA30H

LGGA98H3 Language, Power, and Critical Thinking

An examination of the relationship between language and power in society.

Students will analyze academic, political, male/female, cross-cultural, and journalistic discourse in order to learn how language is used to establish power relations, to express ideology, and to accomplish a variety of other goals in everyday life.
Exclusions: (HUMA12H), (LGGA12H)

LGGA99H3 Linguistic Concepts for Effective Writing

A non-technical introduction to linguistic concepts that will help students write clear and effective prose.

This course presents aspects of descriptive linguistics and provides writing practice and feedback for native and non-native speakers of English.
Exclusions: LGGA17H, LGGA18H, LGGA19H, (LGGA10Y), (HUMA10Y), (HUMA09H) (ENGA12H), ENG100, INI203, INI204, TRN190. This course cannot be used to satisfy the requirements of the minor or major programs in linguistics, nor the specialist program in psycholinguistics, nor may it be used as part of the linguistics component of the major or specialist programs in cognitive science.

LGGB01H3 Modern Standard Chinese I

A comprehensive introduction to Modern Standard Chinese (Mandarin).

Intended for students who speak a Chinese dialect other than Mandarin and have a good knowledge of written Chinese, this course emphasizes Pinyin romanization, reading aloud, discussion, essay writing, and conversion from the complex form of Chinese characters to the simple form.
Exclusions: (HUMB01Y), EAS290Y, LGGB01Y. Students may be excluded from the course if the instructor deems their proficiency in Mandarin to be inappropriate for the level of the course.

LGGB02H3 Modern Standard Chinese II

A continuation of LGGB01H.
Exclusions: (HUMB01Y), (LGGB01Y), EAS290Y. Students may be excluded from the course if the instructor deems their proficiency in Mandarin to be inappropriate for the level of the course.
Prerequisite: LGGB01H

LGGB23H3 Intermediate French I

Intended for those who have some knowledge of French and who wish to bring their proficiency up to the level of normal University entrance. Offers training in written and spoken French, reinforcing reading comprehension, written skills and oral/aural competence.
Limited enrolment: 40
Exclusions: OAC French, Grade 12 French, FSL121Y or equivalent, FREA01H or FSL161Y or higher: not open to native or fluent speakers of French.
Prerequisites: LGGA22H or Grade 11 or equivalent.

LGGB24H3 Intermediate French II

Intended for those who have some knowledge of French and who wish to bring their proficiency up to the level of normal University entrance; a continuation of LGGB23H. Offers training in written and spoken French, reinforcing reading comprehension, written skills and oral/aural competence.
Limited enrolment: 40
Exclusions: OAC French, Grade 12 French, FSL121Y or equivalent; FREA01H or FSL161Y or higher; not open to native or fluent speakers of French.

LGGB32H3 Intermediate Spanish I

This course concentrates on an intensive review of Spanish grammatical principles in the context of written exercises, compositions, and some translations.
Exclusions: SPA220, (SPAB01), (SPAB02), native proficiency in Spanish
Prerequisites: OAC Spanish or LGGA31H or (SPAA01)

LGGB33H3 Intermediate Spanish II

A continuation of LGGB32H.
Exclusion: SPA220, (SPAB01), (SPAB02); native proficiency in Spanish
Prerequisite: LGGB32H or (SPAB02)

LGGC30H3 Advanced Spanish I

Intensive study of grammar and syntax; translation, composition, combined with oral practice.

Detailed examination of the subtleties of Spanish grammar through intensive practice in translation from and into Spanish, composition, and conversation.
Exclusions: (LGGC31Y), SPA320, (SPAC01Y)
Prerequisites: LGGB33H or (SPAB01) or (SPAB03)

LGGC31H3 Advanced Spanish II

A continuation of LGGC30H.

LGGC32H3 Business Spanish

The Spanish language in a business context.

The course is designed primarily for students in the Management/Language Program but is open to others. Translation, correspondence, and individual and group oral presentations. The aim is to develop facility in the vocabulary and structures of this specialized use of the Spanish language.

LGGC33H3 Spanish Practical Translation

A workshop in translation from and into Spanish.

Translation of texts from advertising, commerce, entertainment, law medicine, politics, science and technology, and sport will broaden students' vocabulary and develop proficiency in handling non-literary modes of expression. Evaluation is based on weekly assignments, active participation in class discussion, and an examination.
