As the cost of obtaining a post-secondary education continues to increase, we understand that it is becoming increasing difficult for students to finance their education. The University of Toronto believes that every student should be able to receive a university education, regardless of their financial situation, and is committed to ensuring that all students have access to the resources necessary to meet their financial needs. This is outlined in the Policy on Student Financial Support, passed by the Governing Council in April 1998. In 2004-05, the university allocated approximately $1.5 million dollars worth of scholarships and financial aid for UTSC students.
The federal and provincial governments operate various loan programs to assist students in financing their post-secondary studies. In Ontario, the OSAP program offers assistance to students that are Canadian citizens, permanent residents or convention refugees that are residents of Ontario. Visit the Financial Aid website or the OSAP website for more information.
The University of Toronto offers various internal scholarships for students, as well as other external awards. Visit the Awards and Scholarships website for award and deadline information.
Bursaries, also called grants, are non-repayable sums of money provided by the University to assist students who encounter financial difficulties. Undergraduate bursary funds are designed to assist those students who have explored all other avenues of financial assistance (i.e. OSAP, bank loan/line of credit, family support, summer and part-time work).
University of Toronto Advance Planning for Students (UTAPS) is a financial aid program for full time students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents and are eligible for need-based government student assistance or funding from a First Nations band.
The Work-Study program facilitates part-time employment for students on-campus. In addition to supplementing a student’s income, a majority of Work-Study jobs also supplement the student’s current field of study with practical work/career experience, or duties useful for future academic programs. Applications and position postings are available in the Academic Advising and Career Centre.
