A study of English literature from the end of the eighteenth century to first decades of the twentieth century, in the context of relevant intellectual, aesthetic, social, and political developments. The spring term of the course provides a general introduction to four traditionally designated periods of English literary history: the Romantics, the Victorians, the fin de siècle, and Modernism.
Required texts (available at the Scarborough College Bookstore):
The Norton Anthology of English Literature, Volume 2, (sixth edition) packaged with the Norton edition of Charles Dickens's Hard Times. (Please note that this edition of Hard Times is NOT available for separate purchase. It can only be obtained packaged with the Anthology.
