Blue Republic: Super It
Organized by the Doris McCarthy Gallery
In Super It, artist collective Blue Republic is investigating the idea of the "it" - something that's on the verge of becoming or looking for form. They are interested in situations where the old is disintegrating, but the new hasn’t yet had a chance to appear. Particularly relevant and timely in the context of the economic crisis in Europe and North America, the rise of the extreme right, street demonstrations in Greece and Spain, the Arab Awakening, the riots in the U.K., and the return of the troops from Afghanistan, Blue Republic uses humour and playfulness to begin a dialogue about these serious issues.
The exhibition features installation (a sprawling mini-metropolis made of found materials), photography (documentation of temporary interventions produced by painting with water on the shorelines of the Canadian Shield) and mixed-media sculpture.

David R. Harper:
Entre le Chien et le Loup
Organized by the Doris McCarthy Gallery in partnership with the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery and Kenderdine Art Gallery
In Entre le Chien et le Loup, Harper explores the doctrine and traditions of esoteric orders and secret societies, juxtaposing the nuances of ritual against the explicit message of traditional monument. His works - embroidered animal hides and taxidermy-based sculptures - consider the idea of order, whether in mystical terms or in the structures we create every day. Speaking to domesticity, spirituality, nature and mortality, Harper engages the viewer in a dialogue on the metaphoric weight that the objects present both historically and emotionally.
A full-colour catalogue with essays by Ann MacDonald and Crystal Mowry, produced collectively by the DMG, Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery and Kenderine Art Gallery will be available in 2013.
