Mandate

The mandate of the Doris McCarthy Gallery is to be a visionary professional art gallery dedicated to the collection, presentation and dissemination of contemporary art in all media.

Our goals include:

To showcase Canadian and international artists of exceptional merit at all stages of their careers from diverse backgrounds within carefully considered curatorial contexts;
To further general knowledge and critical perspectives toward contemporary art by creating opportunities for local artists and audiences to experience and engage with works by artists from other regions and countries;
To be a place of scholarship through residencies, workshops, symposia, exchanges or other projects that enhance understanding, encourage dialogue, provide new skills and experiences of contemporary art;
To serve as an archive and resource of contemporary art for academic, arts and educational communities;
To publish critical and theoretical texts so as to document and contribute to the current contemporary art discourse;
To build a unique and substantial collection of contemporary art;
To engage in networking, information sharing, and the development of a strong national and international network of contemporary art galleries, curators and artists;
To stimulate the communities of the University of Toronto Scarborough (students, faculty, staff and alumni);
To develop new audiences for contemporary art in diverse communities;
To develop an important collection of Doris McCarthy’s artworks and to care for her complete personal and artistic archives.
