Concurrent Teacher Education Program

There are two Concurrent Teacher Education Program options at U of T Scarborough:

Concurrent Teacher Education Program/Arts - French:

This program prepares students to become teachers at the primary/junior (Kindergarten to Grade 6) or the intermediate/senior level (Grades 7 to 12) with specialization in French.

Concurrent Teacher Education Program/Science - Mathematical & Physical Sciences:

This program prepares students to become teachers at the primary/junior (Kindergarten to Grade 6) or the intermediate/senior level (Grades 7 to 12) with specialization in Math, Physics or Chemistry.

Program Requirements

• A Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree (see the Degrees section of the UTSC Calendar for specific degree requirements - http://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/courses/calendar/)
• French students must complete a specialist, and they can combine it with either a major or a minor from the list of teaching subjects, which are offered at U of T Scarborough.
• Concurrent Education - Science Students at U of T Scarborough are required to complete an appropriate specialist program, or two major programs
• Students should maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 by the end of Year 2 (completion of 8 Credits) to remain in good standing.
• If a student obtains a grade below 2.5 they should consult with their Academic Advisor.

1. Teaching Level: Primary/Junior (P/J); Intermediate/Senior (I/S)
   P/J will be generalist teachers responsible for teaching many subjects including Math, Music, Drama, Science, etc. At U of T Scarborough, P/J students must choose one of the following: a major in Math, Chemistry, Physics, or a specialist in French to receive admission.
2. Anchor subject:Every concurrent education student intending to teach in secondary school must select one Anchor Subject, which becomes his or her first teaching subject. U of T Scarborough offers the following Anchor Subjects for which students receive admission:
   French, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics
3. Specialist and Major programs
   Every student must complete an approved specialist program or two approved major programs.

Eligible Specialist and Major Programs

• Specialist Program in French
• Specialist Program in Chemistry
• Specialist Program in Mathematics
• Specialist Program in Mathematics and Its Applications
• Specialist Program in Natural Sciences
• Specialist Program in Physical and Mathematical Sciences
• Specialist Program in Physics and Its Applications

Two approved major programs, one of which must be from the following list:

1. Major Program in Astrophysics and Physics
2. Major Program in Chemistry
3. Major Program in Mathematics
4. Major Program in Physical Sciences
5. Major Program in Statistics

4. Other teaching subjects (declaring and monitoring):

   In addition to having an anchor subject, each concurrent education student intending to teach in secondary schools must select another teaching subject from the list of other teaching subjects offered in each unit.

   I/S candidates must focus in depth on their teaching subjects and they must complete 4 or 5 full credits in their chosen area.

   By the end of Year 1 of the program, students must decide on their second teaching subject so that they can start working towards accumulating the 4 or 5 credits required.

   Students who enter the program in Year 2 are required to declare their second teaching subject when accepting their position in the program.

   Declaration of teaching subjects and level of specilisation

CTEP students who expect to complete four or more credits by the end of the 2009 Winter session must declare their:
• teaching level (primary/junior or intermediate/secondary)
• teaching subject(s) - anchor and second subject
• specialist or major programs that are associated with their anchor subject

In some cases these selections have already been added to students’ records, but there are cases where this information is missing. Please login to ROSI and review your student record. If the above information is missing you will need to submit it on ROSI as soon as possible. Instructions on how to do this and a list of the associated ROSI codes are available at the URL below.

AT U of T SCARBOROUGH, STUDENTS CAN SELECT FROM ANY TEACHING SUBJECT LISTED AS LONG AS THEY ARRAGNE TO ENROL IN APPROPRIATE COURSES AND COMPLETE THE REQUIRED 4 OR 5 FULL COURSES IN THE CHOSEN SUBJECT AREA. * Child and Adolescent Development in Education- please note: you are NOT required to take any recommended introductory Psychology courses before registering for PSYB21.

****  Anchor subject Internship must be completed any time between years 3, 4 or first semester of year 5. You will not be able to complete the internship in the winter semester of year 4 while completing your professional semester at OISE. The internship can be completed in the GTA, in a different province or internationally.
