The Department of Anthropology of The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in biological anthropology beginning Fall 2009. Ph.D. in Anthropology is expected to be in hand at the time of the appointment. We seek a biological anthropologist with biocultural research interests in one or more of the following: genetics, nutritional anthropology, maternal and child health, reproductive health and ecology, evolutionary medicine, international health, growth and development, or human adaptability. Department of Anthropology, Dartmouth College

Dartmouth College Department of Anthropology seeks a biological
anthropologist for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant. The

Candidates should have an active program of research and scholarly

ARCHAEOLOGY POSITION, SKIDMORE COLLEGE

Skidmore College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Archaeology at
the Assistant or Associate Professor level, to begin September 2009. We seek a
broadly trained archaeologist able to integrate subdisciplinary perspectives in
teaching and research. The successful applicant will have field work experience in
the Americas and a demonstrated ability to involve students in field experiences.
Research and teaching interests might include, but are not limited to, gender,
political economy, ethnoarchaeology, museology, art and symbolism, landscape or
engaged archaeology. Desirable skills include GIS and/or collections management.

Position requires teaching introductory and upper division anthropology courses,
including methods and theoretically and area focused topics. An interest in
contributing to other interdisciplinary programs such as American Studies,
Environmental Studies, Latin American Studies or Women's Studies is also desirable.
Applicants must demonstrate excellence in teaching, active scholarship, and a strong
commitment to undergraduate education at a liberal arts college. Ph.D. required at

Stony Brook University: Human Behavioral Ecologist

The Department of Anthropology at McMaster University invites applications for a tenure-stream faculty position in Physical Anthropology at the Assistant Professor level. Tier 1 Canada Research Chair Available in Physical Anthropology
The Department of Anthropology at McMaster University invites applications for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) faculty position in Skeletal and Dental Anthropology.  Candidates for Tier 1 CRC positions must be full professors or associate professors who are expected to be promoted to the full professor level within one or two years of the nomination. They must be outstanding and innovative researchers whose accomplishments have made a major impact in their fields; be recognized internationally as leaders in their fields; have superior records of attracting and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and will, as chairholders, be expected to attract excellent trainees, students and future researchers. In addition, the candidate must propose or be engaged in an original, innovative research program of the highest quality.

Candidates for McMaster’s Tier I CRC position in Skeletal and Dental Anthropology are expected to demonstrate outstanding research records in one or more of the following areas: skeletal and dental development: comparative patterns of growth and variability in human skeletal and dental development; demographic reconstruction, including methods of sex and age-at-death estimation; comparative analyses of markers of morbidity; and integration of biological and cultural influences in the analysis and interpretation of bioarchaeological remains.

10-month fixed-term Lectureship:
We are inviting applications for a 10-month fixed-term Lectureship in
Archaeology for the 2008-9 academic year, replacing Dr Peter Jordan who will
be on research leave. Candidates with teaching experience in the fields of
world archaeology, British prehistory and material culture studies are
particularly encouraged to apply, and we would welcome candidates from both
the humanities- and science-based branches of the discipline. The successful
candidate will also complement and extend existing research strengths in
Archaeology such as northern and circumpolar societies, hunter-gatherer
studies, ancient mentalities, religions and world-views and landscape

Permanent Lectureship and Permanent Senior Lectureship/Readership:

This is a call for applications for two Contract Osteologist Positions in the Office of Repatriation Osteology Laboratory, Department of Anthropology, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.  Please see our website: http://anthropology.si.edu/repatriation/

Duties:
Record visual observations and measurements of human skeletal remains following data capture standards developed by Buikstra and Ubelaker and the Repatriation Office Osteology Laboratory. The osteologist will:
1. Inventory the skeletal remains.
2. Estimate the age and sex of individuals.
3. Record taphonomic changes.
4. Record skeletal pathology and trauma.
5. Record any cultural modifications.
6. Collect postcranial measurements.
7. Write short summaries for each set of remains.
8. Enter these data into a database using the Lab’s computer programs.
9. Assist in the retrieval, inventory, restorage, and packing of remains to be repatriated.
10. Submit a written monthly report outlining the work completed during the month as required in the contract.

Work closely with the Osteology Laboratory staff, case officers from the Repatriation program, and, when necessary, with the curators of physical anthropology of the Department of Anthropology at the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH).

Requirements:
Coursework in Human Osteology, Forensic Anthropology, and Paleopathology.
Experience in conducting human osteological inventories.
Experience in describing skeletal pathology.
Experience with standard methods of sex and age determination from the skeleton.
Experience in research-oriented data collection from a large series of skeletons

Techical Criteria:
A minimum of a completed Master’s degree in Biological Anthropology is required; PhD in Biological Anthropology is preferred.

Terms:
One or two-year contract with the possibility of renewal.

Starting Date:
Preferably July or August 2008.

Starting Price Range for Services:

The Role
Following a significant and sustained rise in student numbers for the
undergraduate BSc Anthropology and BSc Biological Anthropology
programmes, and following a University of Kent teaching award to our
Biological Anthropology team, the Department wishes to appoint an
individual to the position of Lecturer G7/8 level or Senior Lecturer G9
with a research specialisation preferably in human
evolution/palaeoanthropology or human osteology and forensic
anthropology. However, we welcome applications from strong candidates in
other areas of Biological Anthropology, such as anthropological
epidemiology, human behavioural ecology or anthropological genetics.

There are 2 positions for this post available.

The Person
The Department expects to appoint someone who will strengthen and
develop research and teaching in Biological Anthropology, and who can
work effectively with colleagues in this endeavour. It is anticipated
that the appointee will contribute significantly to the teaching of
general biological anthropology and quantitative methods courses at the
undergraduate level, undertake a share of undergraduate project
supervision, and develop and teach modules in their area of
specialisation together with more general modules in biological
anthropology, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Proven
teaching ability at undergraduate level is essential. The ability to
develop, and contribute to a taught MSc in Evolutionary Anthropology may
also be an advantage.

The Department
Anthropology at Kent was established in 1965. Since 1997 it has been an
independent department within the Faculty of Social Sciences following a
merger with the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE). It
has been independently judged ?excellent' by the Higher Education
Funding Council, and was ranked first against all other departments of
anthropology in the 2007 National Student Survey.

The Department offers BA and BSc undergraduate programmes in Social
Anthropology and Anthropology respectively, as well as BSc programmes in
Biological Anthropology, Medical Anthropology, in Biodiversity
Conservation and Management and Wildlife Conservation. It offers taught

RCUK Academic Fellowship - Human PalaeoGenetics

LEVERHULME CENTRE FOR HUMAN EVOLUTIONARY STUDIES

Applications are invited for a RCUK Academic Fellowship in Human
PalaeoGenetics. The prime criteria for appointment will be excellence in research in the area of human evolutionary genetics, with particular
emphasis on the extraction and analysis of ancient DNA. The University expects to appoint someone who will strengthen and develop the Centre’s research programme in human evolutionary genetics and who will actively contribute to the Centre’s aims of fostering multi-disciplinary research in human evolution. The person appointed will be expected to gradually take on some teaching, as well as engage in public outreach for the subject.

However, the Fellow will be expected to devote most of the first four years of his/her tenure to research. This post is funded for five years by RCUK and the Isaac Newton Trust. Subject to a probationary period and satisfactory performance, the postholder will be appointed to a permanent academic post at the end of the five-year fellowship period.

The pensionable stipend is in the range of £24,161 to £28,010, depending upon experience. The position is available from 1 April 2007.

Duties:
Record visual observations and measurements of human skeletal remains following data capture standards developed by Buikstra and Ubelaker, and the Repatriation Office Osteology Laboratory.
The osteologist will:

8. Write short summaries for each set of remains;
9. Enter these data into a database using the Lab's computer programs;
10. Assist in the retrieval, inventory, restorage, and packing of
remains to be repatriated;
11. Submit a written monthly report outlining the work completed during the month as required in the contract.

Work closely with the Osteology Laboratory staff, case officers from The Repatriation program, and, when necessary, with the curators of physical anthropology of the Department of Anthropology at the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH).

There are no requirements for producing written summaries of skeletal series. However, the contractor is encouraged, with Repatriation Office approval, to present research results at professional meetings.

Requirements:
Coursework in Human Osteology, Forensic Anthropology, and
Paleopathology.
Experience in conducting human osteological inventories.
Experience with standard methods of sex and age determination from the skeleton.
Experience in describing skeletal pathologies.
Experience in research-oriented data collection from a large series of skeletons.

Techical Criteria:
PhD in Biological Anthropology is preferred; Master's degree in
Biological Anthropology is required.

Lakehead University Department of Anthropology

Anthropology: The Lakehead U. Dept of Anthropology (in Thunder Bay, Canada) seeks a biological anthropologist with expertise in forensic anthropology. The successful candidate must have a PhD at the time of appointment, and is expected to develop a strong, externally funded research program. Teaching responsibilities will be 2 full course equivalents (FCEs), and will involve teaching of introductory biological anthropology, forensic anthropology, and human skeletal biology. The Dept of Anthropology is a six-person faculty with undergraduate programming in socio-cultural and biological anthropology, and archaeology. It is part of the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies, is one of the few undergraduate programs in Canada that offers both B.A. and B.Sc. degrees, and courses and research infrastructure in Molecular Anthropology (ancient DNA) and Geoarchaeology. University of Guam, Epidemiologist

The College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CNAS), University of Guam (UOG), invites applications for a three-year tenure-track appointment in epidemiology, at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Emphasis will be directed to cancer research, in affiliation with the University of Guam Cancer Research Center, under a U-56 partnership grant with the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii.

Duties will include the conducting of population-based research that addresses chronic disease community health needs of Guam, with emphasis on cancer epidemiology.

Collaboration will be expected with biological, health, and social science researchers in CNAS and other UOG units, and with professionals and officers in Guam’s public and non-governmental human service agencies. Other expectations include seeking outside funding for independent and collaborative research projects, and teaching one or two courses per year in epidemiology and biostatistics. This position involves approximately 80% dedication to research and 20% to teaching.

Minimum qualifications include a completed Ph.D. in Epidemiology, Public Health, Environmental Health, Biomedical Anthropology, Demography, or a closely related field. The successful candidate will be engaged in work that is methodologically innovative, and will be able to demonstrate accomplished excellence in epidemiological research methodologies and biostatistical data analysis. Experience in working with large data sets using computer programs such as SPSS, SAS, Epi-Pro, and BMDP is required, as well as a record of distinguished research publication in refereed journals.

The Anthropology Department at the University of Maryland currently offers an undergraduate program with focus areas in archaeology, biological anthropology, and cultural anthropology, as well as a unique and nationally recognized professional program leading to the Master of Applied Anthropology degree. We are developing a proposal for a Ph.D. program. The department is also home to the Center for Heritage Resource Studies.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Dental Anthropology

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position at the University of Toronto (one-year, extension possible) to study dental morphology and behaviorally mitigated changes to the human dentition in prehistoric human skeletal remains. Ohio State University

The Ohio State University is pleased to announce searches for three faculty appointments in the Department of Anthropology. The appointments are all tenure track, and will begin September 2005. They are for a human biologist, a cultural anthropologist, and an archaeologist. Contract Position for Osteological Data collection in the Office of
Repatriation Osteology Laboratory, Department of Anthropology, National
Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.

Duties:
Record visual observations and measurements of human skeletal remains
following data capture standards developed by the Repatriation Office
Osteology Laboratory. The osteologist will:
1. Inventory the skeletal remains;
2. Estimate the age and sex of individuals;
3. Record taphonomic changes;
4. Record skeletal pathologies and trauma;
5. Record any cultural modifications;
6. Collect postcranial measurements;
7. Verify inventory records through the use of existing electronic
documents to confirm the identification of each individual's
provenience.
8. Write short summaries for each set of remains;
9. Enter these data into the computerized database system;
10. Assist in the retrieval, inventory, restorage, and packing of
remains to be repatriated;
11. Submit a written monthly report outlining the work completed during
the month as required in the contract.

Work closely with the Osteology Laboratory staff, case officers from the
Repatriation program, and, when necessary, with the curators of physical
anthropology of the Department of Anthropology at the National Museum of
Natural History (NMNH).

There are no requirements for producing written summaries of skeletal
series. However, the contractor is encouraged, with Repatriation Office
approval, to present reports at professional meetings.

Requirements:
Coursework in Human Osteology, Forensic Anthropology, and
Paleopathology.
Experience in conducting human osteological inventories.
Experience with standard methods of sex and age determination from the
skeleton.
Experience in describing skeletal pathologies.

Technical Criteria:
Master's degree in biological anthropology.
Research-oriented data collection from a large series of skeletons.

Terms:
Two year contract with the possibility of renewal.

Northern Arizona University's Department of Anthropology -- Instructor

Northern Arizona University's Department of Anthropology invites
applications for a full-time, one year, non-tenure-track instructor in
Biocultural Anthropology beginning August 23, 2004. Minimum
requirements include expertise in biological anthropology and ABD in
Anthropology. Applicants must be prepared to teach at the undergraduate
level (majors and non-majors). Preference will be given to candidates
with an emphasis in biocultural anthropology. The successful candidate
will teach four sections per semester in both undergraduate physical anthropology (including the core Biological Anthropology course for majors) and undergraduate Liberal Studies courses in cultural and biological
anthropology. The semester course load may include multiple sections of
the same course (e.g., two sections of ANT 101). Preference will be
given to candidates with a demonstrated commitment to working
effectively with a diverse university community. Salary ranges from
$32,450 to $36,000 depending on degree level.

ONE JUNIOR RESEARCHER and TWO POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS IN PALEOLITHIC ARCHEOLOGY

The Max-Planck-Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig (Germany) invites applications for a junior research position in Palaeolithic Archaeology at its new Department of Human Evolution. Within a multidisciplinary environment, the department is dedicated to Paleoanthropology in it’s broadest interpretation, with three groups of scientists represented: human paleontologists, Paleolithic archeologists and archeological scientists/geochronologists. We will be undertaking a number of international field projects.

The junior researcher position is a 100% research position and therefore has no teaching obligations. The department will provide substantial support in a highly stimulating academic environment, and we expect the successful candidate to contribute to the research of the group as a whole, as well as undertake high quality original research in his/her specific field. He or she will be engaged in at least two main field operations of the department and should demonstrate experience in conducting excavations on Paleolithic sites with innovative techniques. The position is for four years initially, extendable up to six years. The selected candidate will have a Ph.D. and ideally a post-doctoral experience with a strong track record of research.

Two post-doctoral fellowships in Paleolithic archaeology are also available. The candidates should demonstrate research excellence and be able to contribute to research on the sites that the department will excavate. Lithic microwear and zooarcheology are of areas of particular interest, but we will consider researchers in other sub-fields.

The Department of Anthropology at The University of Western Ontario invites applications for two full-time appointments, one in Bioarchaeology and the other in Archaeological Sciences. Cercopithecine models as a contextual framework for human evolution.
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Anatomy on a 3-year collaborative project with the Universities of Durham and Liverpool funded by the Leverhulme Trust, starting on October 1st 2003. This is an interdisciplinary project that will integrate behavioural and morphological aspects of cercopithecine biology in order to illuminate human evolutionary history. The primary responsibilities of this position will be to collect, collate and analyse cercopithecine morphological data. Applicants should have a relevant PhD and experience in primate/mammalian morphometrics. Salary on the RA1A Grade Point 6 - 20,311 per annum

Duties:
The Department of Native Studies at Brandon University is seeking to fill a term position in Physical/Biological Anthropology and Archaeology. The duration of the term will be two to five years, subject to budget and the qualifications of the successful candidate.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach a wide range of undergraduate courses in Physical/Biological Anthropology (such as medical and forensic anthropology, paleopathology, primatology, paleoanthropology).

Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in Physical/Biological Anthropology is preferred but ABD applicants will also be considered. In addition this person will have some expertise in western Canadian archaeology and be willing to teach the Archaeological Field School. Evidence of an established program of research is also required.

Candidates should be specialised in Hominid evolution with research interests in human paleontology, comparative morphology, or molecular biology of primates (including humans). Reporting to the Manager of Heritage, the Chief Archaeologist is responsible for administering all field and headquarters programs and policies relating to archaeological resource management and research activities in Nunavut. The Chief Archaeologist will oversee the activities of 2 staff that deliver field programs and services, and will ensure that Nunavut's archaeological resources are managed according to legislated and professional standards. The Chief Archaeologist is also
accountable for enhancing the Nunavut's archaeological research and training capacity in accordance with federal and territorial archaeology legislation and policies, and with the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement.

Candidates must have a graduate degree (Masters or Doctorate) with a specialization in arctic archaeology, and a minimum of 5 years of archaeological field experience in the arctic, in a supervisory capacity. The incumbent should have a firm understanding of the methods and techniques of cultural resource management, well-developed analytical and problem solving abilities, advanced computer skills, and the ability to interpret and administer complex policies, legislation, and regulations. The incumbent should also have a firm understanding of the social, cultural and political climate in Nunavut, proven management and supervisory experience in the heritage field, and the ability to communicate effectively with individuals having diverse cultural, educational, and professional backgrounds. Knowledge of government and legislative processes are essential, as is the ability to effectively organize teamwork and motivate staff. Equivalencies will be considered. The ability to communicate in Inuktitut and/or Inuinnaqtun would be an asset.

Equivalencies that consist of a combination of education, knowledge, skills and abilities equal in worth to the formal education and experience requirements will be considered.

Salary starts at $71,585.00 plus a Northern Allowance of $16,274.00 per annum.
