Finance & Trading Lab

Finance and Trading Lab

U of T Scarborough is home to
one of the largest and most sophisticated undergraduate finance labs in Canada. The Finance & Trading Lab is a “Library for the 21st Century” at the University of Toronto Scarborough, and is located in the Department of Management and operated in partnership with the University of Toronto Scarborough Library.

More than 3,000 students use the Finance & Trading Lab each year, making it one of the most prominent and heavily used spaces on campus.

This state-of-the-art facility provides Management students with the opportunity to apply classroom learning in real-time by researching and analyzing companies, observing and interacting with the market in simulated trading environments and creating investment ideas and pitches.

The lab provides students with 60 double-monitor computer workstations that simulate a professional trading floor. The workstations feature industry- standard products, including FactSet and Capital IQ and four Bloomberg terminals. A stock ticker displays real-time data and news on hundreds of publicly traded companies, and a large LCD screen carries a constant broadcast of breaking news from global markets.

Experiential Learning Hub

The Finance & Trading Lab enables our students to network with potential employers, learn from accomplished professionals, experience the excitement of a career in global finance, and develop a strong sense of community within their chosen field of study.

Co-curricular activities and events include guest speakers from the finance industry, as well as portfolio management and stock pitch competitions that help students develop their analytical and critical thinking skills.

More than 100 students compete in the annual U of T Scarborough Trading Competition. In 2015, the Finance Lab played a pivotal role in enabling six U of T Scarborough students to finish in the top 12 of the Rotman Online Trading Competition. These students went on to compete against teams from around the world in the prestigious Rotman International Trading Competition.

A dedicated lab manager and a finance librarian, who collectively have 14 years of investment banking and trade floor experience, support all learning and research activities alongside a team of student assistants who deliver a daily market wrap-up to students.
