Thank you and your child for your interest in participating in our Dance Study! In this study, we are investigating how children ages 3-6 years move to different types of music. We are asking you to videotape your child moving (including but not limited to dancing) along to 4 songs. At the end of the study, you will have completed 2 Google Forms and uploaded the videos to us through WeTransfer.

Part 1: Dance Party!

The Part 1 Google Form begins with Caregiver Consent section, which describes the nature of the study. Carefully read and complete the section if you agree for your child to participate. Of course, you or your child can choose to stop at any time.

Prepare for the Dance Party as follows:

Music: The music has been embedded onto Google Forms as YouTube videos.

Space: Prepare an open, safe area for the child to dance in.

Recording device: You may record on any video camera such as your cellphone or webcam. You may record all 4 songs as one video. However, if you/your child takes a prolonged break, please stop the recording and start a new recording when they are ready again.

Directions for parent/guardian:

  • You may encourage your child to dance only whenever the music is NOT playing, i.e. before/between songs.
    • During the songs, do not interfere with your child: let them move (or not move) however they would like. We want to see what they do on their own!
    • During the songs, you may smile and give words of encouragement, e.g. “Great job!”
  • If your child moves out of frame, please follow them with the camera to the best of your ability.
  • Feel free to take a break at any time.

Directions for child:

  • Is your child completely ready for the dance party? E.g. washroom break, finish food, etc.
  • When your child is ready, give them the following instructions:
    1. We are having a dance party! Can you dance along to some music for me?
    2. Dance however you’d like!
    3. Tell me when you need to take a break! Ready? Here we go!

Uploading files:

  1. Once the dance party is complete, on your device with the videos, click here to email us the files through WeTransfer. Please make sure dancestudyutsc@gmail.com is in the “Email to” field.
  2. Add your files (up to a total of 2 GB). If not all your videos fit in one transfer, you may send us multiple transfers.
  3. Enter your own email.
  4. In the message, include your child’s initials and date of birth (with month in letters), e.g. UTSC Dance Study_LL_2016Feb04.

Part 2: Family Questionnaire

The Part 2 Google Form asks questions on your child’s musical preferences and family background.

You have now completed the study. Thank you!

Once we have received your completed materials as above, we will provide you with a debrief document that will give you more information about this study along with your child’s electronic Junior Scientist certificate. If you would like a printed copy of the certificate, it can be mailed to you one once our physical lab space re-opens (date currently unknown)—please ask us about this.

You will also be entered in a draw to win a $30 CAD Amazon.ca gift card (odds are 1 in 20). Winners will be contacted by email.

We thank you sincerely for your participation and we hope you and your child had an enjoyable experience!
