Christine Bolus-Reichert’s research centers on Victorian and neo-Victorian literature, especially ballads and romances; literary architecture and literary landscapes; and fantasy and science fiction. She is the author of The Age of Eclecticism: Literature and Culture in Britain, 1815-1885 (The Ohio State University Press, 2009), which focused on two broad understandings of eclecticism in the period—one understood as an unreflective embrace of either conflicting beliefs or divergent historical styles, the other a mode of critical engagement that ultimately could lead to a rethinking of the contrast between creation and criticism and of the very idea of the original. Her articles have appeared in RomanticismNineteenth Century ProseStudies in the Novel, and ELT: English Literature in Transition, 1880-1920. In 2014, she published her first short story, “What Happened at the Pond,” in Luna Station Quarterly; it was subsequently reprinted in The Best of Luna Station Quarterly: The First Five Years (2015). Other new work, “Sky Sailing: Steampunk’s Re-enchantment of Flight,” is forthcoming in a collection about imaginative geography in children’s literature. Work in progress includes a fantasy novel (her fourth) and “Erotic, Violent, and Wild: Romance Phenomenology in The Water of the Wondrous Isles,” her third article about William Morris.
