Call for Abstracts
The 3rd Forum for Critical Chinese Qualitative Research
Special Interest Group in
14th International Congress on Qualitative Inquiry

After its establishment in 2015, the Forum invites interested practitioners to advance the community. At the individual level, the Forum provides a platform for qualitative practitioners at all stages of their careers to present their work, receive feedbacks, and bring one’s work into fruition. Collectively, the Forum is to establish and advance critical Chinese qualitative research. Echoing the ICQIW’s thematic focus, “Qualitative Inquiry in Troubled Times,” the Forum of Critical Chinese Qualitative Research will use the following topics to organize its 3nd pre-conference, May 16, 2018:
- On the doing, teaching, and/or learning of critical Chinese qualitative research:
- How is criticality conceptualized by qualitative practitioners in the Chinese context?
- How is criticality practiced methodologically and/or epistemologically in the Chinese context?
- How to advance critical qualitative research in the Chinese context?
- What is the relationship between criticality and indigenization of qualitative research in the Chinese context?
- What is the relationship between criticality and globalization of qualitative research in the Chinese context?
- How to collaborate with practitioners in the global South?
- On interdisciplinary dialogue:
- How is qualitative inquiry practiced in humanities, social sciences, and other disciplines in the Chinese context?
- What are the challenges and accomplishments?
- How to facilitate interdisciplinary dialogue and cross fertilization of qualitative inquiry?
Abstracts address the above issues will be organized for presentation at the Forum. Abstracts on other topics will be arranged for presentation at the International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry. Submissions should include both an English (150-word) and Chinese (300-word) abstract. The actual paper can be either in English or Chinese.

Authors of papers accepted for presentation at the pre-conference will be notified a few weeks after the submission deadline. Completed papers submitted/circulated by April 15, 2018 are eligible for consideration for the best paper award on the grounds of methodological, epistemological, and theoretical contributions to critical Chinese qualitative research. The award will be announced at the pre-conference.
Presentation and discussion at the pre-conference can be in English or Chinese. They will take the forms of presentation by the author, critiquing among participants, and brainstorming for result dissemination.
Participants of the Pre-conference can enroll in workshops on qualitative methods (May 17th). You also have free access to the 14th International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry (May 17th-19th).
