Cities of Learning: the University in the Americas is a two-day
symposium about the ways in which major research-intensive universities across the hemisphere engage with their respective cities/regions to enhance research, teaching and city building. This symposium will be the culmination of a series of academic
colloquia and conferences on themes related to the Americas at the University of Toronto, inspired by the 2015 Pan American and Parapan American Games being held in Toronto this summer.

The symposium will examine these inter-relationships, exploring university-city
interactions and the dynamics between major games and cities, focusing on city building and the role of the university in contributing to the arts, science, design and critical
understanding of the city.

The symposium will occur in two parts:

The morning of Monday May 11 will feature a Presidents’ Panel where University of Toronto President Meric Gertler will welcome President Marco Antonio Zago of the University of São Paulo, Brazil, President Alberto Edgardo Barbieri of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina and President Robert Zimmer of the University of Chicago. The Presidents will discuss the most important ways in which their universities contribute to their
cities/regions, the questions these relationships raise and the lessons they can offer to other universities in the Americas.

The afternoon of May 11 and all day May 12 will feature issue specific sessions by University of Toronto faculty who will be joined by colleagues from other cities in the Americas, with the participation of undergraduate and graduate students.
