Biography: 

Bettina von Lieres is currently the Interim Associate Director for the CCDS and extraordinary Senior Researcher in the Political Studies Department at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. Her current research focuses on new forms of citizen action and mobilisation in the global South. Recent publications include "Mediated Citizenships: The Informal Politics of Speaking for Citizens in the Global South" (co-edited with Laurence Piper, 2014). From 1991 – 2002 Bettina held university research and teaching positions in Cape Town, South Africa. From 2002 – 2011 she participated as a lead researcher in a transnational development research network, the Development Research Centre for Citizenship, Participation and Accountability, which was hosted by the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex, UK. From 2008 – 2011 she co-convened an international teaching and learning network which brought together over twenty development researchers and practitioners from eight countries to develop a set of global courses on citizenship, democracy and poverty. She is the co-founder of a new global research network, the Collaboration for Research on Democracy (CORDnetwork.org).
